Tryptophan is an amino acid that determines the physiological digestive activity of enzymes, is involved in the renewal of blood plasma proteins, and is responsible for normal functioning of the endocrine, hemopoietic and reproductive systems.

Tryptophan-deficient diet results in slower growth of young animals, reduced egg production in laying hens, increased feed costs in respect of the products, endocrine and sexual glands atrophy, blindness, anemia, lowered resistance and immunity of the organism, poor fertilization and hatchability of eggs.

In pigs, tryptophan-deficient diet results in reduced feed intake, perverted appetite, bristle roughness and exhaustion, and fatty liver. The deficiency of this amino acid also leads to sterility, increased excitability, convulsions, formation of cataracts, negative nitrogen balance and loss of body weight.
